Clean and Tune a Porter Cable Benchtop Planer/Jointer

This Porter Cable benchtop planer/jointer came into the shop rusty and out of square. Here’s what it took to get it cleaned up, adjusted, and cutting true again.

Cleaning the rust off

The machine had surface rust across the bed, which makes the stock drag and throws off an accurate cut. First step is getting the table surfaces clean before anything gets adjusted.

Disassembly and adjustment

With the rust off, the machine comes apart enough to check and adjust the squareness of the tables and the blades. This is the part that actually fixes how it cuts — cleaning alone doesn’t square a machine.

Testing the cut

Last step is running test stock through it to check for a clean, square cut before calling it done.

This machine is the #2 video on the channel by watch time — turns out a lot of people have a rusty benchtop planer/jointer sitting in the corner of their own shop.
